 As a concerned Canadian, I am writing to urge you to actively support the adoption of a basic income by the Federal government.
 COVID-19 has shaken the core of the Canadian economy. The magnitude of the challenges millions of Canadians face, in light of the pandemic and the resulting economic impacts, are tremendous, and will continue to be felt for a long time. This is why it is vital and necessary to transition temporary emergency benefits into a permanent basic income program to help Canadians truly ‘build back better.’
 Research points to improved health and reduced stress for those on a basic income, and most recipients of a recent Canadian pilot program reported being able to manage family, paid employment, and community responsibilities better than before. Many recipients were able to move to higher-paying and more secure jobs. The financial stability a basic income offers has the potential to reduce costs to our health, justice and long-term care systems down the line, while creating more stable and happier families and individuals. And a basic income would both reduce the red tape burden and remove the indignity of social assistance programs, as well as create a firm grounding from which all Canadians can rebuild.
 Many countries around the world are seriously considering a basic income, or are actively implementing it. We cannot be left behind, and our economic recovery depends on all Canadians having the resources to meet their needs. Without those resources, our local economies, across the nation, suffer as people have less money for consumer spending - even on necessities - that in turn means job creators have to make hard decisions to offer fewer jobs.
 
 I believe it is time to make a basic income a permanent program in Alberta and all of Canada. I hope that you will be part of the building of a happier, healthier, more secure Canada for everyone.
